Daum
The origin of Daum, a renowned luxury brand internationally recognized for its exclusive glass and crystal collections, dates back to 1875 when Jean Daum acquired a Glassworks company in Nancy, France.
Daum’s company expanded in 1885 with the addition of an Art Department, marking the beginning of his pioneering enterprise within the glassmaking industry. Daum’s creativity became especially apparent in 1901 with the creation of the important and influential Ecole de Nancy that spearheaded the Art Nouveau movement. Following the elaborate ornamentation associated with the Art Nouveau movement, Daum artists moved towards simplistic ornamentation styles during the Art Deco movement.
Glassmaking techniques continued to advance well into the 20th century, and in the 1930s, Daum perfected the production of crystal. Daum’s success with crystal enabled this new material to replace glass, providing their artists with new opportunities and furthering their reputation as a creative and innovative company.
Daum continued to evolve in the 1950s, when they initiated a new style of Free Forms in which artists shaped crystal into organic forms. In the 1970s, Daum refined the ancient glassmaking technique, Pate de Verre. This technique, along with a rediscovered wax molding technique, enabled Daum artists to combine a rich palette of colors with a precision of curves and lines that would be otherwise impossible to achieve.
Daum continues to be recognized as one of the greatest luxury brands to date. Since its origins, the company has remained dedicated to its values of creativity and innovation. Daum has always excelled in glass and crystal making techniques, and has capitalized on the cultural tradition of the Lorraine region while still remaining at the forefront of contemporary creations. Every Daum piece is hand-made, which identifies the exclusivity and individuality of Daum’s products and ensures that no two pieces are exactly alike.
